Full-time 9000 RMB, 15 classes a week

at AMT in Xian

About Employer:
We are a small, personally owned English teaching school looking for a Native English Speaker to join us in helping our school grow. We are a small, close knit team and the entire curriculum and program has been designed by us.

We are located in the famous historical city of Xi’an, the ancient capital of China for over 2000 years.

As we are a small company and you will represent our first foreign hiree, there is a opportunity for growth and advancement should you be interested. You have the potential to be a manager later on and receive a salary of up to 20,000 RMB a month. That is a ways down the line, but if you are interested in making a long term commitment and helping the business grow (and growing right along side it), the opportunity is there for the taking.

Work Location:
Xi’an

Job Description:

  • Hours: Wednesday – Friday, 5-9, weekends 9-5 (hours are negotiable, but this is the general range. If you don’t have class, you don’t have to be there if you don’t want.)

An explanation about the hours: The aim is 15 hours, the hours listed are just the range they would fall under.

For example, let’s say you have 2 classes a day Wednesday – Friday, and you teach from 6:30 – 8:40 (10 minute break between 1 hour classes), that means you have put in 6 teaching hours. So on the weekend you should expect to have 9 teaching hours. It’s negotiable when those hours would be. They could be Saturday morning and afternoon plus Sunday morning, or Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon/evening, or you could pull a mega-teaching day Saturday and have Sunday completely off, whichever.

The bottom line is it would work out to 15 hours. However, if you are willing/able, you are welcome to take on more classes and so get an even higher salary. I myself teach about 25 hours a week. It’s busy, but not overly so. It’s entirely up to you; if you want more classes, we could get them for you, but 15 hours is the minimum goal so you can make the 9,000 RMB. We will not push you to take on more than the 15 hours.

  • Salary: 150 RMB per class/hour. Once you reach the maximum capacity of 15 class/hours per week, you will be making about 9000 RMB per month.

For the first 3 months, you will receive a “probation” salary of 5000 RMB, regardless of how many classes you actually teach. After this 3 month period, you will begin to get paid based on the number of classes you actually teach.

We will add classes for you as quickly as we can so you can make the maximum amount of money.

  • Students: range from kindergarten to high school. You can also take on some private adult classes if you’re interested.
  • Curriculum provided.
  • No office hours, no hidden fees, no extra hours of any kind, no BS

All we ask of you is show up an hour before class (for preparation purposes, once you get in the swing of things, 30 minutes prior is fine) then as soon as class is over, you are free to go. We are not going to try to milk extra hours out of you like other employers in China, nor will we use any kind of deception to try to exploit you to our advantage; I am an American, I am honest and upfront, I have been a teacher in China for many years myself and I hate that game as much as anyone. I don’t play it.

What you need to be:

Responsible
Serious about the job
Passionate
Assertive
Self Reliant
Experienced (especially with kids)

This is a fairly relaxed, free-flowing environment. The curriculum will be provided to you and general teaching pointers will be discussed, but for the most part I expect you, as an experienced teacher, to be able to handle the classes and their requirements with very little supervision. I’m not going to be breathing down your neck and I hope you will handle this relative freedom responsibly. That means no showing up to work drunk, late, hungover, unprepared and the like.

This is not your typical teaching job in China. It’s probably more relaxed than anything else you’ll find out there. And like I said, if you are interested in really committing yourself to the business, you could become a manager/part owner further down the line. The opportunity is what you make of it.

We are looking for an experienced, self reliant, passionate, serious (about the business) open minded teacher. Is this you? Shoot us an email and let’s talk.
