Seeking English Teachers for Sept 2012
2-4 positions
5,500 - 6,000 RMB/month, 20 teaching hours/week free apartment, roundtrip airfare

Classes consist of 25-55 freshman or sophomore students---90% female---most of whom are on the teacher preparation track. Some classes, too, for business English. Students from all majors participate in English corners. The west campus is a second tier college with “er ben” students, while the east / old campus---with more English majors---is more like a private college, for the “san ben” students who got lower scores on their college entrance exams..

Beside teaching, you can also participate in optional English corners and other cross-cultural events such as English movie corners and English song sing-a-longs, or join in student club-sponsored volunteer teaching in village schools in Fuyang’s outskirts, schools for the handicapped, visits to nursing homes, and HIV outreach. Some opportunities, too, for outside part-time teaching work (though pay is lower than in the big cities).

Fuyang is situated in a still mostly agricultural, heavily populated, inland plains area (the climate supports a winter wheat crop, and corn and soybeans in the summer). Many of the area’s young people go to find work in China’s coastal provinces...An Oscar-winning 2007 documentary about area AIDS villages’orphans, “The Blood of Yingzhou District,” was filmed nearby....About three hours to the northeast is the area where Pearl Buck, author of “The Good Earth,” did her research in 1917-21...Fuyang’s local dialect is closer to that of the neighboring Henan province, and the old folks listen to Yuju / Henan opera.

The school has 23,000 students but only four foreign teachers (plus two expat teachers at another nearby vocational college). Urban Fuyang, with 1-2 million residents, has few foreign companies, and though it’s got pleasant parks and some old architecture---the Wenfeng Pagoda---it’s not much written up in the English guide books. On the street you’ll see few foreign tourists or those here for business; sometimes you’ll bump into foreigners on NGO programs. Shopping is OK (a new Walmart!), one McDonald’s, six KFCs, plus a nice Xinhua bookstore. The city is safe, people are curious about and friendly to foreigners (we’re still a novelty), and living costs are much lower than in Shanghai (8 hours away by train or bus). You can get to most places in the city by taxi for less than 10 yuan (US$1.40).

Fuyang Teachers College has had foreign English teachers since the early 1990s, many recruited through the Amity Foundation and the UBCHEA (United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia).
